So, get ready to experience a unique adventure by visiting this wonderful island.

Rethymno, Venetian charm and summer entertainment

The city of Rethymno also preserves beautiful vestiges of the Venetian era such as the Fortezza fortress dominating the city, the ramparts and its magnificent Renaissance-style buildings along the promenade.

But Rethymno is also a very lively city in summer with many restaurants, bars and shops. In September, the atmosphere is more relaxed while maintaining a festive atmosphere. Take the opportunity to stroll along the charming sandy beach of Rethymno, lined with a lively pedestrian promenade. A stay of 2 to 3 days will allow you to appreciate the different facets of the city.

Arkadi Monastery

The Arkadi Monastery located in the mountains south of Rethymnon is another must-see. Founded in the 16th century, it is known for its role in the Cretan resistance against the Ottoman occupation. In 1866, its monks preferred to blow themselves up rather than surrender to the Ottomans.

Today the monastery remains an important place of pilgrimage. You can admire the Venetian architecture of the church and the cloister and discover its small museum retracing the tragic history of the site. I advise you to combine the visit with a hike in the surrounding green gorges. Allow 2 hours to fully enjoy the monastery and the surrounding landscape.

Balos lagoon

In the western end of Crete lies another little gem: the Balos Lagoon. This beach is one of the most photogenic in Greece with its turquoise and pink water surrounded by cliffs. To get there, two options are available to you:

A short hike with an elevation gain of 500m. Allow 2 hours round trip or take a boat from Kissamos to reach Balos. It’s quicker but still allow 2 hours on site to fully enjoy it.

In both cases, leave early in the morning to avoid the heat and enjoy the beach without too many people. The panorama from the high belvedere overlooking the lagoon is spectacular. Don’t forget your swimsuit, cap and sunscreen!

Episkopi beach

Episkopi Beach is a beautiful stretch of golden sand that borders the northwest coast of Crete, really close to Rhethymon.

Relaxed atmosphere and the perfect balance of natural beauty and local charm. The warm, shallow waters provide a safe environment for families with young children to swim and play in the sea. While the nearby tavernas offer a delicious taste of traditional Greek dishes in a welcoming setting. Plus, the sandy shoreline lined with lush vegetation creates a picturesque backdrop for sunbathing or leisurely strolls along the water’s edge.

Chania, Venetian architectural jewel

Nicknamed the “Cretan Venice”, Chania is a beautiful port city with typical Venetian architecture. Stroll through the pedestrian streets lined with colorful houses of the old Jewish and Turkish quarter.

Admire the elegant facades along the old port. Visit the Kioutsouk Hassan mosque transformed into a museum then climb the Venetian ramparts for a panoramic view of the city and the bay.

Don’t miss the covered market either to discover local flavors. With its unique blend of Cretan, Venetian, Ottoman and Jewish influences.

Samaria Gorge

The Samaria Gorge is undoubtedly one of the most spectacular hikes in Crete. Located in the southwest, these gorges constitute a protected national park. The dizzying canyon created by the Samaria River between the peaks reaches up to 1000m deep!

It’s an unforgettable 18km hike with 14km in the gorges. Allow 5 to 7 hours of walking, bring good shoes, plenty of water and start early to avoid the heat. You will walk through a grandiose setting before reaching the ancient village of Samaria where taverns and watering holes await you.

From there, you will reach the coast via an easier path of around ten kilometers. A ferry will take you back to your starting point. It’s a demanding expedition but well worth the detour! The landscapes are exceptional.

Kournas lake

In the heart of the Chania region, Lake Kournas is the only freshwater lake in Crete. Surrounded by mountains, this little turquoise green gem is ideal for a refreshing stopover during a road trip to western Crete.

You can swim, pedal boat or simply relax by the lake. There are also small restaurants with a view of the lake to eat. Around, pretty little villages and olive groves to discover.

The picturesque village of Loutro

A little corner of paradise nestled on the southern coast of Crete, lost between the mountains and the sea, Loutro seems frozen in time. Providing a haven for anyone looking to escape the hustle and bustle of the modern world.

Life here seems to unfold to the rhythm of the waves that caress the pebble beach and the boats that sail peacefully towards the horizon. The atmosphere is peaceful, warm and welcoming, giving the impression of having discovered a hidden treasure on this wonderful island of Crete.

Triopetra Beach

Triopetra Beach is a hidden treasure nestled along the southern coast of Crete, offering a peaceful atmosphere and crystal clear waters ideal for swimming. This undiscovered gem provides the perfect setting for those seeking a quiet, secluded beach experience away from the crowds.
